Your Daily Groove - Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Out | Modern Hippie Mag

“‘Turn on’ meant . . . become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them; drugs were one way to accomplish this end. ‘Tune in’ meant interact harmoniously with the world around you . . . express your new internal perspectives. ‘Drop out’ suggested an active, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. . . . Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean, ‘Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity.’” – Timothy Leary

hippie“Turn on, tune in, and drop out” helped define the first wave of hippies but has since been largely dismissed as a proclamation of the caricature hippie that added nothing to society. However, as the modern hippie revisits the slogan today, it has the potential to revitalize the spirit of peace and love that unfortunately got lost in the haze.

As Dr. Leary said, drugs were only one way to Turn On to higher levels of consciousness. Today, millions more are finding those levels through meditation and conscious living. Every day, more and more people Tune In to the connectedness of all beings and how every one of our acts has global consequences. People the world over are finding the strength, courage, and wisdom to Drop Out of the cycles of mass consumerism, genetic modification, and rampant industrialization in order to create a more healthy and harmonious world.

When the first wave of hippies Turned On, Tuned In, and Dropped Out through the use of LSD, some had good trips and some had bad trips depending on the state of their mind. As we Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Out by consciously creating a new society, the changes may not take on psychedelic colors, but rest assured that some perceptions will be distorted. What kind of trip will it be for you?
